Masvinu told Zimbo Jam, "I was invited as a guest of honour and I will be the one to crown the winners. I am very happy to have been invited to this event as it is making me gain popularity.”
He added that he was open to further invitations, “I am still available to anyone who wants to use me, and I have my eye out for the Harare Agricultural Show."
Entertainment manager of the City Sports Bar, Ronnie Bere, explained to Zimbo Jam that the joint will take its current weekly beauty contests, held on their popular Ladies’ Nights, a step further and have the weekly winners and runners up compete in a monthly final.
“The winner and runner up of the beauty contest each week will compete in a final event at the end of the month where we will have Mr Ugly chaperon the winner,” said Bere.
City Sports Bar, as with many other clubs around the country, holds its ladies’ nights every Thursday. On this day it’s free entry and a free cocktail for all the ladies.
Their ladies’ nights also see the women taking part in drinking, eating, singing and other competitions along with various games that include balloon popping and guessing games. For the competitions, the crowd decides who wins.
The first monthly contest, themed Beauty and the Beast, takes place on August 2, 2012. The winner will take home the title Miss Mafaro Chete. The title stems from the bar’s byline- mafaro chete (nothing but happiness).
When Zimbo Jam spoke to Masvinu and his manager a few weeks ago, they lamented the lack of financial gains that had come with the Mr Ugly title. Masvinu won US$100 and night out in a hotel room.
Masvinu pushes a cart and loads vegetables at Mbare musika for a living.
With an endorsement from a hardware store in the works, and this latest gig, it seems his fortnes are changing.
