Zimbabwe Fashion Week was launched in Harare last night, August 29, 2012, at a private cocktail held at the magnificent Highlands residence of the South African Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Vusi Mavimbela.

The top South African diplomat welcomed guests to his house with a red carpet and warm South-of-the-Limpopo hospitality. “This is South Africa away from South Africa,” he told guests, “enjoy yourselves.”

And enjoy themselves they did, aided by a constant flow of drinks, non-stop jostling for photos with the special guest for the evening, South African artist, Toya Delazy and the charm of meeting new people when they are dressed not just to kill, but to brutally commit multiple murders.

In his short welcome speech the Ambassador also spoke about how he hoped the Embassy could support more events like Zimbabwe Fashion Week. “Part of our broad mandate as an Embassy is to support business and people to people collaboration, and this is an example of this. It is our first time supporting ZFW and we hope to be able to do more of the same.”

It was one of those glamorous events when everyone dresses up and looks hot. Other guests included Cape Town Fashion Council CEO, Bryan Ramkilawan, African Fashion International Marketing & Communications Manager, Allana Finley, models from Botswana’s renowned First Models Agency, Munn Marketing Managing Director, Thembe Sachikonye, Catherine Ruze Modelling Agency Director, Shamiso Ruzvidzo, several designers and other representatives from fashion and business.

A fashion show featuring an elegant men and women’s collection by Zimbabwean label Vicenzo Valli put the evening into colourful perspective and primed things up for the coming three days when fashion threatens to take over Harare. Vicenzo Valli is owned by husband and wife team Euston and Felistas Mabika.

Zimbabwe Fashion Week opens to the public today, with the first show at for 8pm at the VW Showroom in Harare. It will run until Saturday, September 1 and will feature some of Zimbabwe’s top designers, including Alice Knuth, Colin Ratisai, Maita Marimo and Bisma Ahmed along with several designers from South Africa.

Toya Delazy will give a performance at tonight’s opening.
