What is happening to our blood relatives?

In the 38 years of Zimbabwean independence, the way we relate to our blood relatives and extended families has changed. Over the last 20 years, millions of Zimbabweans have left the country and now many attend funerals and weddings only in spirit as they choose to send money home rather than use it for a plane ticket.

The National Gallery’s artwork of the week is ‘Demolition’ by Joan Evans. The abstract painting portrays “a once flourishing place that has been completely destroyed with torn down buildings and structures.”

The painting “expresses the vicious Cycle of Poverty ; the figure sits dejectedly due to being left without any opportunities to a better life marked by socio-economic constraints such as unemployment, crisis of expectation and a low standard of living.”
