Poetry Paradise at HIVOS Poetry Cafe

Zimbabwe’s spoken word movement has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years and now the front runners like Chirikure Chirikure and Albert Nyathi can be proud of the legacy that they leave behind. The majority of slam poets who can be seen performing at Harare music venues, belong to a different style of poets but at the HIVOS poetry café a balanced combination represented Zimbabwe, whilst Oneness Sankara, a guest poet from the UK brought the house down at the end of the show.

Jazz Tap Ensemble

I was very excited to be covering the Jazz Tap Ensemble HIFA debut at the 7 Arts Theater in Avondale.  I had read about them in our local press and could not wait to watch this group.  JTE is a United States dance company based in Los Angeles.  They have appeared in major concert halls both in the United States and internationally. The Jazz Tap Ensemble is well known for innovating the art of rhythmic tap dancing to the music of  live jazz.

Siyaya @ HIFA

On opening day , Saimon Mambazo Phiri dropped by at our mobile office on the HIFA grounds.  I was  excited to be given the opportunity to speak to him and find out  how Siyaya, as an arts group, has survived for 23 years in Zimbabwe, where artists work under difficult conditions.  For instance, they don’t have pensions, medical aid and insurance cover to look after them in their senior years or in case of their career coming to an unexpected end. When they are no longer performing people soon forget them.

With a name like Queendom, it’s no surprise that one of the highlights of HIFA 2012 has been this three piece female group. The three ladies who make up the outfit are African daughters living in Norway. The Queendom sisters include Monica Ifesilika from Nigeria, Asta Busingye from Uganda and Hannah Nozene from Ethiopia.

Fan-maker Extraordinaire- Maria De Barros

On the fourth day of HIFA I went to watch Maria de Barros at the Lays Global Stage.  Maria is a musical artist born in Dakar Senegal to parents who come from Cape Verde, an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean near the coast of West Africa.
