PowerFM DJ, Leander Kandiero (a.k.a. DJ Lee or Captain Lee) always presents his shows beautifully. That’s off course my personal opinion but I know from the numerous phone-ins he gets that I am not alone in thinking this. When he presents the Power FM’s Top 20 on Saturdays, it always has this different feel and seems more interesting than when other DJs present the same show with almost the same songs. Probably it is something in his voice or just the way he says things otherwise the content is 90% similar to that which is presented by other DJs.
During Wedding Bells, I’ve heard some interesting stuff. Did you know that in one Western or is it Asian country (pardon me for my short memory), the families of the bride and the groom rush to buy something after the wedding because they believe that between the newly weds, the first to present a little something for the new home becomes the head of the house. Funny isn’t it? The other thing that also struck me was the fact that at some other place (that I forgot again), the bride returns to her family soon after the wedding and they cut a piece of the wedding cake and put it on a plate then the plate is thrown through the window. The obvious is expected because the belief is that if that plate breaks, it means their daughter’s future in the marriage is bright and if it does not break, the future might not be bright. Weird. Mr. Lee also mentioned that when the new couple cut the cake together, it resembles their attachment and mutual understanding is expected and they will do everything together. Mr. Lee went on to tell us about more research he did. He said that there is a tradition that bakes wedding cakes and puts the wedding ring in the ingredients so that the wedding ring goes inside the cake. Now when the cake would be shared on the wedding day, the person who gets the piece with the ring will have a life full of good fortune. Listeners have lately decided to extend the messages to couples who have been engaged and those who have anniversaries so Mr. Lee has allowed those messages. It’s always good to listen to people wishing the best to lovebirds and that always makes me fantasize you know. Did I talk about his selection for this session? Leander surely knows the best tracks to go with wedding messages. Probably I should consult him or better still make him my DJ on my wedding because he knows the right tracks for that. Leander if you read this please take it into consideration!!! His other session during the week on Power FM is Zimbabwe’s finest. This is a program where Leander talks about the finest places in Zimbabwe. The program is a promotion of Zimbabwe ahead of 2010. For example, he once featured Great Zimbabwe and hey, the man did his research. He gave tones of information about the site and I discovered there is so much that I did not know about the historical monument, a site in a city where I have spent the better part of my life. It is during this session that Leander plays what he calls Zimbabwe’s finest music. Among the many talented Zimbabwean musicians, he has played Dream Girl by Fortune Mparutsa, Lovemore Majaivana, Chiwoniso Maraire’s and Ngoni Kambarami. Hey did you know that this other DJ from the UK played a snippet of the song Dream Girl to Akon and Akon actually was so awed by it that he wanted to sign Fortune up to his label, Convic Records. Unfortunately, Fortunate passed away before he could work with the great Senegalese star. - Tendai Chimuriwo Share this page... |

During his Sunday show he starts off with the “Wedding Bells” he just blows me away. This session is dedicated to those who would have tied the knot over the weekend and their friends and relatives send in congratulatory messages. Leander always gets overwhelming response from the listeners. To prove this, during his “Wedding Bells” session, he usually starts off by clearing a backlog of text messages from the previous show before going into new messages and this takes him a considerable amount of time. The session is allocated an hour from a total of 3 hours for a normal DJs show.
