Chris Brown & Jordin Sparks. INSET- Winky D.

With the abandoning of the 70% local content policy on the airwaves, local music is facing tough competition as some DJs opt to play more international music.

Right: Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks.

Inset: Winky D. His song Rokesheni was the highest placed track by a Zimbabwean artist on the top 100 songs of 2008.

The votes for the top 100 songs of 2008 bear testimony to this. About 60% of the songs that made it to the list were not by Zimbabwean singers.

Winky D's Rokesheni was the highest placed Zimbabwean song at number 3.

Top song of the year was No Air by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown.

The votes were compiled from text messages and emails sent to Power FM.

Americans making up the list???When did Americans become Zimbabweans? The results
prove that Zimbabweans are ID1OTS.Nothing else.
Mandla Stone  - In response to your comments I say.......   |2009-04-04 13:28:39
hahah all these negetive commnets come from Zimbabweans who arent even
in
Zimbabwe, they are living in the diaspora. Before blaming others shoudnt they
be travelling back to their home come country so that the communities in Zim
become 100% zimbabwean and the English community becomes 100% english. Silly
people are so shallow they dont even realise that while in England the top 40
official hits has shed loads of american black music more than the english music
only a few hits are european hahaha what shallow thinking. all they are good at
is seeing
the wrong in others before themselves.

I think you are the stupid
and shallow ones.
you are right   |2009-01-17 03:22:58
NO WONDER WHY THE COUNTRY IS MESSED UP
Mandla Stone  - hmmmmmmm   |2009-04-04 13:31:38
no the country is meesed up because of corruption and quitters like you who ran
away instead of staying and toughing it out with everyone else.

You are very right. It is a big shame. And we blames whites for calling us
backward ignorants.
Mandla Stone   |2009-04-04 13:35:27
The call us that because we are even more racist than they are. We cant even
unite as a nation yet english, scots and Welsh can do that when they need to but
Zimbos cant see past gukurahundi. All harare people think they are americans and
Bulawayos think they are south Africans /tswanas (south Africa is proud to be
south African what do Zimbos do, adopt every country they go to. they go to
south for one week come back with accent and everyything and think they are
virtually south African and white people arent as bad as you make them. Yes
there are factors that are racist but there are lots who love blacks and lots
who just dont care.

Di   |2009-01-17 03:17:47
This is great you silly Zimbos. Now we have some real competition for our songs.
Being Zimbabwean does not mean only listening to Zim songs or Zim artists.

We
are Zimbabweans because of the summation of cultures that make us so.
Zimba  - Stupid Di   |2009-01-17 13:11:19
Di you are as stupid as those who are being despised.Isnt it common sense to you
that Zimbabwe top 100 should NOT be America top 100.Vakapata.Africans will never
prosper and prompte their own because of your stupid mentality.
Chido  - ms   |2009-02-24 04:59:52
I don't know who the bigger fool in that whole argument was but I think someone
was missing the point. It was Zimbabwean music lovers' top 100 not top 100
Zimbabwean songs.the people had a choice at watever they listened 2 to choose
wat they thot was best to their ear in the year gone by and at a scale of 1 to
100.they are exposed to all those songs and they chose their best 100 prefered
songs from whoever.get it?I hope yu realise not to insult those who have
exercised their right to choose when their ear has been given a level playing
field.Africans will prosper and they will do so when they stop pulling each
other down becoz the other sees things from a blinkered perspective.
Di  - Stupid Zimba   |2009-01-19 00:26:31
Iwe Zimba. You are the one who is showing deep stupidity here.

Why is America a
great country? Because they take the best from other nations and incorporate it
into their culture.

I'm not saying that we should make American music our own
BUT thoses guys have set a standard that we can but emulate!
Zimba  - Di think   |2009-01-19 08:43:15
So what are you saying Di ?Yes to you America is a great country? Because they
take the best from other nations and incorporate it into their culture.and they
have set a standard that we can emulate so DOES THIS MEAN TOP 100 ZIMBABWE SONGS
SHOULD BE AMERICAN SONGS.Wake up from your slumber.Top 100 ZIMBABWE means
ZIMBAWE and not AMERICA 100.

Chris Brown and all these other Americans are
not living in Zimbabwe either and how can their songs be at the 100 Zimbabwe
songs ?Do you understand common sense?ARE THE TOP 100 SONGS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE
FOR ZIMBABWEANS AND NOT AMERICANS?
Mandla Stone   |2009-04-04 13:41:30
dont forget Rhianna is not american so how come she's big on american charts,
would you even know rhianna if it wasnt because America put her on their
American charts. yet she is from the Carribean, she is not American but who is
the most famous rnb Artist at the moment (Beyonce and Rihanna) or they are
somewhere there at the top. So please please please people know all the facts
before critisizing. If you were constructive we'd appreciate but you just being
negetive. are you saying since this is a zimbo website it should only be in
venecula becoz jam is an england or america or aussie world. OMG
Di  - Zimba Wakeup   |2009-01-19 16:19:41
@Zimba: If we had 100 Zimbabwean songs that were HOT enough we
wouldn't have ANY American songs in the top 100!
Zimba  - What hot songs   |2009-01-20 13:05:57
Di,HOT songs according to who?So you mean eversince Zimbabweans started singing
there are no hot songs according to Zimbabweans? You are kidding me.

Ok so if
there are no enough 100 Hot songs they should then look for 10 HOT, 5 HOT or 1
HOT rather than have 100 full of American songs .That list has some Zimbabwean
songs so they should count those songs and have their HOT number from the
list.Kupata chete kwemaZimba hapana chimwe.Kusadzidza just like the rest of
Africans.
Kusa  - Missy   |2009-03-04 10:08:42
saka iwe urikureva kuti wakapusa vo here zvaunoti kupata chete kwemazimba. iwe
ndiwe usina kutodzidz manje. ungatadza kunzi wakapata iwe uchizvituka wega
Di   |2009-01-21 10:27:26
Now you are starting to talk a bit of sense Zimba. They should make it
exclusively for Zim songs otherwise there will ALWAYS be songs from other
countries- America included.

Even if they make it top 10 and they don't make
it exclusively for Zim songs you will find Beyonce and co will STILL feature.
Zimba  - Thanks Di   |2009-01-22 16:51:06
You are right. That's what I've been saying all along. So by saying top 100
ZIMBABWEAN songs it means top 100 ZIMBABWEAN songs and NO other country.
sithatshi   |2009-02-11 14:09:04
they are not idiots ,it will encourage them to do better if the competition is
hard
Natasha   |2009-02-11 14:26:21
Yes. Put them in the oven- with the world's best. That will give them a shake
and encourage higher standards.
archie  - a big WHY?   |2009-02-17 09:13:29
Why Americans always, does it mean we are incapable, Mayb let me say we want
that 75% local back, i thnk ths myt help our artists to b recognized locally.
Lets support our local musicians guy.

If we live by JEHOVA's standards vision and missions surely we would love each
other unconditionaly with positive regard. Anywhere all this badness fulfil the
prophesy of the bible when it says in the last days people will be slunderers,
lovers of themselves, unloving, withou kingness, blasphemers, fornicators,
adulterous the list in endless. The devil has blinded many for sure, it cuts me
deep in ma heart when people are bad to each other. Jesus taught us to love one
another and Jehova claims that if u can't love your brother whom u have seen you
cannot love me whom you have not seen.God is love are you.
Jaison Midzi  - No Culture   |2009-11-19 11:32:48
Zimbabwean pieces cannot make it to the top because Zimbabwe does not have a
standing cultural base. Its a mixed society and the only thing to do is to
listen to music from established cultures like that of slaves from America like
Neyo and Britney. Those American guys are just useless lots who were made to
believe in nothing other than drugs and care less ponography. Zimbabwean culture
is deemed illogical by the youth and the elders who have tended to find refuge
in churches etc. Thge music called Sungura is not even anything to call our
culture. Its just music fro Malawian and Mozambiqean farm and mine workers
I Support Zimba  - Wakapenga Zimba   |2009-12-17 10:58:25
u r right in every sense, America is great. Britain is great, Zimbabwe sucks.
top 100 zimbabwean songs shud be local. period. thats wat dragged me to this
site coz if i wanted top 100 good songs i wud have gone 2 MTV.com. there are
many artists in Zimbabwe, we produce more than hundred songs a yr and even if it
is boring to u diasporan (zombiz) zimbo we dnt care we want 2 see it in our top
hundred. its juss like saying top 20 zimbabwean footballers and u put Messi on
number 1. Tinotoda Mushekwi...

update the list
h-town  - mr   |2010-01-11 04:49:50
guys don't be ridiculous. i am sick and tired of zimbabwean listeners and
musicians complaining about these lists. people vote for who they like! the only
reason there is a lot of american music on the list is because its good.

do
you realise that the american music industry is so huge that it even contributes
to the natioanl GDP. it is only logical that it be so advanced that they can
market themselves to an extent where everyone including me knows them.

now
the only reason that the likes of winky D and alexio are on the list is because
they are good. if you want to be on the list make it like tuku, oskido, buffalo
soldier, macheso, bundu boys and other zimbos and your music will be highly
rated and could feature on these lists.

the radio staions are there, ztv is
there, channel O and mtv are there. there have been several zimbos who have made
good music and been exposed.

zimbos need to just stop whining zvisina...
pinky  - zim is the best   |2010-01-18 14:38:47
