The Zimbabwe German Society (ZGS), on the sidelines of the Zimbabwe International Book Fair (ZIBF), is today (July 29, 2010) hosting a meeting for writers at its offices in Milton Park, Harare. The meeting is meant to bring heads together to breathe new life into Zimbabwe's book industry. According to a statement from ZGS, "ZIBF cannot exist without writers and as such has seen a need to bring writers together and provide an opportunity to dialogue, network, get an update and chart a new way forward."

Prominent Zimbabwean Economist, Professor Anthony Hawkins, has said that he has no idea how much arts and cultural industries contribute to the economy. “Nobody knows,” he said during a presentation on the state of the Zimbabwean economy held at the Meikles Hotel last night (July 26). The event, which drew over three hundred professionals and business people, was organised by the British Council’s Management Express programme.

After the resounding success of the premiere for Shrek 4 (Shrek Forever After), management at Ster Kinekor Zimbabwe, led by Mr. Clinton Mutamba, have announced that they are planning to host more premieres soon. Their next one seems like it will definitely have an age restriction compared to Shrek which welcomed fans as young as 2 years old. The premiere will be for Salt starring Angelina Jolie.

All is set for the Chitungwiza Gala, taking place on August 20 in Chitungwiza Harare. The musical gala is an annual fundraising event for Chitungwiza General Hospital. The musicians lined up to perform include Alick Macheso, Hosiah Chipanga, Takesure Muronzi, Cephas Mashakada and Kireni Zulu.

The Zimbabwe Fashion week launch and cocktail dinner scheduled for last week Thursday was postponed last minute due to a misunderstanding with the Crowne Plaza Monomotapa Hotel where the dinner was meant to happen. It will now take place on Saturday July 24 at Veros Kitchen at the Borrowdale Brooke Golf Club from 1830hrs onwards. The cost is US$15. It will be a black tie event. Alliance Francaise de Harare has partnered with Zimbabwe Fashion Week to make the 4th edition of Funkalicious the official after-party for Zimbabwe Fashion Week. This will take place on July 31st, the last day for the fashion week. The venue is still to be confirmed but you can be sure there will be lots of funk.

The SADC Poetry Festival, launched last year by Arts Initiates Southern Africa in Windhoek Namibia, returns this year. The 2010 festival will take place in Gaborone, Botswana from August 27 to 29 under the theme My Voice, Your Hand. Arts Initiates was founded by Zimbabwean journalist and writer Wonder Guchu. The scouting team for poets this year includes University of Zimbabwe lecturer and writer Memory Chirere, poet Phinda Mkhonta from Swaziland and Moffat Moyo from Zambia. The festival is sponsored by the Prince Claus Fund.

The Zimbabwe Fashion Week (ZFW) will on Thursday (July15) hold a dinner to officially launch the country’s first ever fashion week which will take place at the end of this month, from 28-31 July. The black tie event will hopefully usher in a new era of fashion in Zimbabwe and designers, publishers and fashion lovers alike are looking forward to the fashion week with anticipation. ZFW was initiated by supermodel, Priscilla Chigariro.

Senegalese-American R'n'B singer, Akon is expected in Zimbabwe on September 14. According to Nehanda Radio, Akon will perform at the National Sports Stadium in Harare and will be backed a line-up of Zimbabwean artists still to be named.

Cee Jay, the One Ariega hit maker has landed in Zimbabwe for a show with John Pfumojena of Ndoda Mai Vangu fame alongside the talented Q Montana at The Mannenberg. The trio will hold a one-off show this Thursday, July 8. The show will also create a platform for Cee Jay to officially launch his new album Ndangariro. After the Mannenberg show, Cee Jay will return to South Africa for a show promoting the playoffs in Newton at Mary Fitzgerald Square on July 10 at 3pm. From there, he will head for the US for a series of shows. Cee Jay will be taking with him Alexio Shaina Kawara and is also hoping to go with Nox Guni on the US Tour.

Peter Tangwena, arguably the most underrated Zimbabwean Rhumba musician, is still popular at Mereki Shopping Centre in Harare's Warren Park D where he sells his CDs and DVDs from dawn to dusk. He is currently working on another album. Tangwena falls short when it comes to staging live shows and has been advised by some fans that he should be visible and get used to performing rather than spend most of his time kwaMereki. However, in a recent interview with The Zimbo Jam, Tangwena said that currently he is staging shows in Mozambique. These claims are yet to be verified.

After a long break Prince Tendai has released a new album titled ChiTown Boy. The album, which is a ten track compilation, features songs from previous albums and some new ones. Prince Tendai also collaborated with Sebastian Magacha, Soulbone and Mehluli “Taz” Moyo, former Africa Revenge member, on this new project which was produced by MacDonald Chidavaenzi.

Esther Mukazika, a former backing vocalist for Ivy Kombo, has released her solo album entitled NaJesu. The Standard reports that the singer hopes her eight-track album will give her much needed exposure and establish her as a powerful artist in her own right. In addition to Ivy Kombo, Mukazika has also worked with the likes of Ruth Mapfumo and Caroline Mujokoro. She is currently trying to put her own band together with which she will promote the album.

The Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) last month began paying out over USD200 000 in royalties to local artists. The association has more than 1000 members and reports that most of them have collected their royalties. Royalties for musicians who are late such as Leonard Dembo are being collected by their spouses or family members.

Popular singer Diana Samkange is set to marry her long time boyfriend Calvin Nyazema. The payment of the bridal price for the singer, who is a few months pregnant, will take place on July 4th. The marriage is, however, threatened by allegations that Nyazema is already married and has other girlfriends. Diana refutes these claims and says she is determined to proceed with the marriage in spite of what people say.

Popular guitarist Clive Mono Mukundu is set to release his latest album in September this year. The album will be titled ‘40’ as its release will coincide with his fortieth birthday. The album features other Zimbabwean greats such as Mokoomba and Andy Brown. Few people were willing to forsake the World Cup matches and brave the winter cold to watch African Destiny strut their stuff at Book Café on Wednesday night (23 June). In spite of the near-emptiness of the venue, the group put on a five star show, performing a number of their popular songs such as Ndokutambira. Lead singer Carmen Hwarari and her band members were full of life and warmed the crowd with their energetic dances and soulful tunes.

Bulawayo musicians have teamed up to revive the Bulawayo Musicians Association (BMA). The role of the BMA is to promote musicians in the city and its environs and since it fell dormant, these musicians like many across the country, have suffered economically, especially through lack of royalties. The BMA also recently held a clean up awareness campaign to mark Culture Week at Entembeni Old People’s Home in Luveve.
