The event will also bring in the Women and Law in Southern Africa Research and Education Trust who will give an update to the students on the Constitution making process as it pertains to women. International Women’s Day (8 March) acknowledges women’s right to be recognised as equal part of humankind. The day is set aside by the United Nations to celebrate and show support of womanhood and the girl child the world over. The schools concert is being held at Mabelreign Girls High to assist the school in raising funds for its recently established a music department. In December, the department got their first musical instruments, 10 Nyunga Nyunga mbiras from Mbira Society Zimbabwe. However, to fully equip the department with the required educational materials, fundraising will be a major aspect of the Friday event. The 5th of March will be civvies day at the school. Every student will pay a dollar in her class towards the fundraising activity as agreed with the school’s Headmistress. The music concert, starting 1300hrs that day, will charge a dollar per person for entrance into the arena for non-performing students and teachers. Refreshments and snacks will be available for sale. Pledges are also expected from invited guests who include United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the Curriculum Development Unit, Women Lawyers Association of Zimbabwe and Educative and Reflective Arts. Other schools participating in the concert are Roosevelt Girls, Dominican Convent, St Giles Special School, Borrowdale Primary, Prince Edward, Churchill Boys High and Harare Girls High School. Young Mbira diva Hope Masike and her band Kakuwe will be the main guest band. Coincidentally, Hope is a former student of Mabelreign Girls High. She told The Zimbo Jam that when she learnt at the school there was no music and she was glad that now they had a qualified music director. "I am hoping to inspire the young girls to consider music at an international and professional level," she added. "The girls need to know they are the future and that yes, they can." ________________ More Info International Women’s Day Schools Concert Activities
