When they were last in Zimbabwe for a concert in December 2006 and then for a brief performance at Miss Tourism Zimbabwe 2007, South African Afro-Pop group Malaika drove their local fans wild with excitement. Two years later they return- for a one night only main stage show at HIFA 2009. Few artists around the world can boast of having a multiple platinum debut album. Malaika is one of those few. Few artists can boast of having won so many awards in so short a career. Malaika, once again, is one of those. Awards under their belts include the Metro FM 2004 awards for Best Afro-Pop Album, Best Group and Best Album, the 2004 Kora Award for Best New Comer Group, the 2005 Channel O Music Video Award for Best Afro-Pop Group, the 2005 Kora Award for Best Southern African Group, the 2005 SAMA Award for Best Selling Album and the 2006 SAMA Award for Best Afro Pop Group. In July 2008 tragedy struck when one of the trio, Jabulani Ndaba passed away after a long illness. However, the remaining duo, Tshedi Mhola and Bongani Nchang collected themselves and they were soon making great music again. Malaika’s music is characterised by a thumping up tempo baseline which always gets audiences to their feet- and keeps them there- till the last note is sung. They are set to thrill Zimbabwean fans once more on Friday 1st May at 1930hrs, African Sun Main Stage. Share this page... |
