In a statement today (29 Jan 2010) the National Arts Council Deputy Director, Mr Nicholas Moyo, announced that the nominees for the 2010 edition of the National Arts Merit Awards will be released next week. In the same statement he said that the attendance at the awards ceremony will be strictly by invitation.
Left: The ninth edition of NAMA will be held 20th February 2010 at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale Harare under the theme Together As One. Those wishing to attend the awards ceremony need to contact the National Arts Council (NACZ) for invitations. The ceremony will open up to public participation through the People’s Choice Award. The NACZ invites Zimbabweans to select an artist who they think did well in the year. Members of the public are encouraged to cast their electronic votes in all sector categories; Music, Visual Arts, Dance, Film & Television, Theatre and Literary Arts. The council will release voting modalities in due course. Meanwhile it has been confirmed that Culture Spear of the ‘Kulenyane’ fame from Botswana will be the main attraction at the awards ceremony. The music and dance group is brought to NAMA courtesy of the Embassy of the Republic of Botswana. The guest group from Botswana will share the stage with local performers to spice up the ceremony. The NACZ has plans to bring regional and international artists to be Award Presenters this year. Confirmed so far is Jason and Dyness from the Zambian Soap Kabanana. The Kabanana family once graced local television screens and drew fans from across the nation. Their visit to Zimbabwe is courtesy of Savannah Pictures a company run by the former CEO of ZBC, Mr Munyaradzi Hwengwere. The occasion of the National Arts Merit Awards is the main forum where the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, recognises outstanding achievements in the area of the arts. By rewarding excelling artistes with the awards of merit, NAMA aims at stimulating more interest in the arts and raise the profile of the same. Over the years NAMA has become the only platform where the who’s-who in the arts and culture sector around Zimbabwe meet with each other and with their fans and the captains of commerce and industry.
