The Artists Supporting Artists concert held at Milton Park Bowling Club over the weekend featured an impressive line up of artists but was marred by poor planning. The show started about three hours late and when the power went about an hour later there was no generator at hand to keep the show going.

The concert was advertised to start at 12pm, but only kicked off around 3pm. At around 4pm the power went and the show stopped for about two hours till the power came back about 20 minutes before 6pm.

Artists having fun

In the mean time a number of artists had been providing entertainment through an impro session of song and dance backed by various instruments.

During the black out a sizeable number of the already thin crowd disappeared. The crowd grew again to about 500 later in the evening as things heated up.

The venue was another point of concern for those who did attend. “More people would have come if this had been located centrally,” commented an employee of the Culture Fund.

The organisers did well however, by providing a tent which meant that the slight drizzle that did fall did not spoil the fun.

The line up of artists who included Baba na Mai Charamba, Bafana Banyana, Willis Wataffi, Victor Kunonga, Alexio Kawara, Bob Nyabinde, Rute Mbanga, Busi Ncube, Banyana Bafana and Willom Tight rose to the occasion and put up spirited performances that kept the crowd on their feet to the wee hours of Sunday  morning.

More fun while waiting for the power

The aim of the show was to raise money to start a fund that would benefit artists in times of need, a highly commendable motive. Hopefully, the lessons from this first show will lead to a bigger and better edition in 2010.

Neni wo I was disappointed by the lack of organisation here. With such a line up
you'd think they would do better.
