Prominent Zimbabwean writer, Ignatius Mabasa, continues to increase the plumage on his literary cap at an inspiring rate. He has been chosen from a field of international applicants for the Canadian University of Manitoba’s 2010 Writer/Storyteller-in-Residence position.
Mabasa will spend three months, September to December, at the University where he will spend half of his ‘office hours’ working on his own literary endeavours and the other half taking part in various literary activities which will include workshops, storytelling and lectures.
A thrilled but calm Mabasa revealed to the Zimbo Jam that the offer had been made to him late last year. In an email to Mabasa, the Director of the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Warren Cariou wrote: “I'm very pleased to tell you that we have chosen your application as the best of an extraordinary field of applicants for our 2010 Writer/Storyteller-in-Residence position. We feel that your work is a perfect fit for the Centre's mandate and we were very impressed with your credentials in every respect.”
In July last year Mabasa thrilled audiences with his performance poetry skills at the San Francisco Poetry Festival. He had started the year off swimmingly by winning a NAMA Award. He has just won another NAMA Award this year, the Outstanding Children’s Book Award, for his tale The Man, Shaggy Leopard and the Jackal and he has another book The Market Superman currently being published in South Africa by Watermark Publishers.
