The National Gallery’s artwork of the week is ‘Demolition’ by Joan Evans. The abstract painting portrays “a once flourishing place that has been completely destroyed with torn down buildings and structures.”

This scenario has sadly been happening more often around the world. In central Italy, earthquakes are being experienced regularly and people are dying by the thousands.  Demolitions can arise from many factors including war and natural disasters like tsunamis, floods, hurricanes and earthquakes.

The painting coincides with the World Tsunami Awareness Day that will be on November 5, 2016. The set-aside day we be running under the theme ‘effective education and evacuation drill.

The fact that most natural disasters are occurring in tourist destinations is a great cause for concern. As such, by observing this day awareness will hopefully reach most people around the world and inform them on how best to react in case disaster occurs.
