The Hub Unconference at Shoko Festival @ Harare City Library | Harare | Harare Province | Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s leading annual new media conference, the Hub Unconference, is set to be bigger and better this year! This year’s edition at Shoko Festival will run from the 29th to the 30th of September at the Harare City Library with a new vibrant format with 25 talks – from lightning talks to panel discussions, from workshops to meetups. As the tradition of the annual conference, there will be speakers from around the globe which include UK, USA, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Join us for an inspired conference under the theme of TechTopia where digital minds meet and dream big! The Hub will have three main focus areas of new media & civic tech, activism and youth culture. This year’s event will dive into the burning issues about the internet today from internet freedom to exploring the latest digital tools available today and how best to use them in the build up, during and post the 2018 elections. Other sessions will also focus on new tech trends and cutting edge youth culture.

The Hub Awards In the same spirit of tradition, there will be Hub Awards which will award 4 prizes worth $4000 each to new cutting edge ideas that use new media and civic tech to solve problems in their community or at a national scale. The awards seek to empower the next generation of new media and tech startups. In the past, startups such as TV Yangu, Spiked and Raki Images have benefitted from this initiative and bloomed into leading digital companies.

The Zim Hip Hop Summit is about building bridges on a myriad of levels. The conference aims to bring local and some international hip hop players to exchange information and explore ways of ensuring growth and sustainability in the Hip Hop scene. Hip Hop is the biggest youth culture in the world and in Zimbabwe, it has been growing for years since the 80s. However, a lot of challenges continue to impede a real take off of the culture into a commercially viable, social and politically impactful movement. It is against this background that we seek to bring heads together to create conversations that can translate into practice. Join us for the cypher!
