Caroline MarufuFormer Miss Tourism Zimbabwe, Caroline Marufu says that the project she is currently working on will “blow your mind.”

The Zimbo Jam met her in her home city of Bulawayo recently and she said that she could not disclose what the project was but added, “It will be big, it will blow your mind.”

Caroline (born 1983) was crowned Miss Tourism Zimbabwe in 2006 and went on to represent the country at the Miss World 2007 finals in China (1st Dec 2007).

Caroline says that during her reign she made a lot of contacts and this has made it easier for her to do business.

Asked how people have responded to her as a public personality she said that feedback had been very positive. “It is humbling to meet someone who says ‘you know, you’re my role model’ and it also inspires me to do more.”

We asked her what she thought about claims that the modelling industry exploits women and she said that every industry had its controversies. “If you allow yourself to be exploited it will happen,” she added.

Commenting on the poor performance of Zimbabwean beauty queens on the international stage she said that she wasn’t sure where the problems was but strongly felt that preparation had a lot to do with it. Caroline Marufu Welcomes Joe Thomas to Zimbabwe, Jan 2008“Girls from other countries really prepare for this. From their wardrobe, to accessories and grooming, they take it very seriously. They have lots of sponsorship from business and we do not have the same level of support in Zimbabwe yet.”

Caroline, who was an English and Geography teacher before she went into modelling says that she got into the beauty business “just for fun” back when she was still a student at Hillside Teacher’s College. There she won the Miss Hillside pageant and went on to take part in Miss Supermodel.

She got her modelling training at Fingers Modelling Agency which is owned by actress and business woman Sarah Mpofu.

Young girls thinking of going into the business, she asserts, should take it as a serious profession. She cautions though that it’s good to have a back up plan, “just as with sport. You need to have your papers.”

Caroline is no longer modelling and is now concentrating on her business ventures. We went out onto the streets of the Bualwayo CBD for a quick impromptu photo shoot though, and I could see that she still has modelling in her blood.

See pictures from that shoot.
