Mercy Mushaninga, the lady behind the Gossip Link Internet Cafés, will on 22nd December hold the first annual Model Extravaganza, a pageant aimed at girls who do not necessarily fit the slender mould of women that are accepted into most beauty searches.

When the Zimbo Jam was invited to the launch dinner for Model Extravaganza (Piccobello Restaurant, Harare, Friday 11 December 2009) we were not sure what to expect. So when we rocked up to the function on Friday evening and were ushered into a room that was dominated by a big table around which was seated a bevy of stunning beauties we had to stop and catch our breath.

According to Mushaninga, a former model herself, she had had the dream of holding such a pageant for a long time now. She said the idea behind the show and the modelling agency she has started called Gossip Models Zimbabwe, was to give the girls an outlet to express themselves. “The modelling industry in Zimbabwe had support about five years ago but now these girls don’t know any modelling agencies,” she told invited guests. “We want to move young women away from drugs, prostitution and other things we witness all the time. We discipline them. These are well disciplined girls.”

She went on to say that her wish was to also promote Zimbabwean fashion designers so that the girls would be dressed by them. Another wish of hers was for the establishment of magazines in Zimbabwe so that the girls could feature on the covers.

Represented at the launch dinner were Upper Crust Restaurant, Alcatraz Fashions, Multichoice, Red Rose Hair Salon and several media houses among other companies.

MC for the launch party, Aura Kawanzaruwa, revealed that the Model Extravaganza pageant will be held at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale and will feature entertainment from Hip Hop dancers; The Flip Flopper, dance sensation; P-Fish Baby, Sam Mtukudzi and Stunner. Taking on the decks for the evening will be Zimbabwe’s talented Belgium based disc jockey, DJ Smoove.

Twenty models, varying in age from 17 to 23 years, will vie for the crown which will come with a cash prize of US$2,000.00 among other goodies.
