Ross Williams, Prudence Mabhena and OscarWhen disabled Bulawayo girl Prudence Mabhena started singing all she wanted to do was just that- sing. When American filmmaker Roger Ross Williams heard about her and her band all he wanted to do was to make a film about them and share their story of courage with the world. None of them ever imagined that they both would attend the 82nd edition of the Oscars to receive a golden statue for the 32 minute documentary.

Thandie NewtonZimbabwean actress, Thandie Newton, will be honoured for her achievements in the film industry this April at a fund raising awards ceremony hosted by Ndoro Children's Charities. She will be one of a number of Zimbabweans who will be celebrated at the event which will be headlined by Oliver Mtukudzi and hosted by another most-notable Zimbabwean, the fiery indie-soul diva Shingai Shoniwa.

Prudence MabhenaA short documentary about a disabled Zimbabwean musician, Prudence Mabhena has made history by being nominated for an Oscar. Last year The Zimbo Jam did a story about how the inspirational Prudence and her band, Liyana, toured the United States, against all odds, and inspired other disabled children.

Cameras flashing, dazzling white smiles, designer suits, trend setting dresses, international accolades, icon awards, showbiz gossip and of course there’s the speeches. Besides our own National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) which is happening in February, the international entertainment world lights up for a series of award shows, starting with the People's Choice Awards last week and the upcoming Golden Globe Awards coming up this Monday.

Olley MarumaFilmmaker, broadcaster, writer and former public prosecutor, Olley Maruma is no more. He passed away, aged 57, at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare on Thursday (7 Jan 2010) after complications from a surgical operation. Apparently, he had been ill for some time but many of his close associates in literary and business circles were not aware of it.
