We’ve told you this before, but we are so excited about it that we will tune, sorry toon you again. The JAAG is on FAIA!  Call the police, the JAAG is on FAIA!!!! This month, the Joint Afrikan Animation Group (JAAG) brings you Zimbabwe’s first ever festival for animated film, the Zimbabwe Festival of African Inspired Animation (ZIMFAIA pronounced Zimfaya as in moto). Get ready to burn some high octane imagination fuel and vroom off into the land of fantasy created by some of Zimbabwe’s most unchained minds.

The JAAG is on FAIA!

ZIMFAIA is made possible through the support of Alliance Française and will run for two days from July 30 to July 31 at the Alliance Française de Harare premises at 328 Herbert Chitepo Avenue.

The theme of the festival is Out of the Box, referring to the emergence of the animation industry in Zimbabwe.  Visual effects artists and animators will be coming out of their respective "boxes" and the industry itself will be coming "out of the box" demonstrating its potential and verve to produce what the consumer is searching for.

Solomon Maramba

^ Solomon Maramba deep in thought. When you see work by JAAG you'll wonder between fits of laughter, "How on earth do they think these thing up?"

The festival’s Director Solomon Maramba said, “animation has been somewhat of a shadowy player in Zimbabwean film and visual communications. From advertising to architecture its influence has been central for well over a decade, but has been largely unacknowledged by many outside of the small community of animators itself, and the few knowledgeable clients whom they service.”

Amid realisation that their industry was under-appreciated the group came together and came up with ideas on how they were going to get their craft spot lighted for the world to see.

^ You will love Ambivalence, the 'salad chick' who wants to know why you didn't call her on her Nokia and who wants you to escort her kumashops- whether you like it or not. Ambivalence is one of the many outta the box characters you will meet at ZIMFAIA.

“ZIMFAIA, therefore, aims to bring the joys and remarkable possibilities of animation to a wider national and continental audience, by highlighting, both the full breadth of international animation activities, and the ready accessibility of skills within those various activities in Zimbabwe, where a deep pool of dedicated, knowledgeable and highly capable animators exists, and continues to grow,” added Maramba- whom we all know as Solo :-).

The festival will consist of film screenings, an animation production workshop and a digital art work exhibition. The Zimbo Jam has partnered with JAAG and will highlight some of their most amazing work on our site in the run up to and during the festival.
