It was standing room only last night (30 Dec 2008), at the biggest Miss Tourism Zimbabwe pageant the country has ever seen. A capacity crowd which included officials from the army, Ministers, business tycoons and the usual happy Hararians filled the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) in a sold out pageant that was televised live to the nation and won by Miss Tourism Harare 2008, Vanessa Sibanda. Over four thousand people crammed into the Conference Centre for the much awaited final that has been postponed at least twice. Outside, there was a traffic jam as policemen, overwhelmed by the huge amount of traffic, battled to direct drivers to alternative parking spots after the main parking lot inside the HICC grounds filled up. Some enterprising young men were charging US$5.00 to watch people’s vehicles in the out-of-grounds parking.

So hectic was the traffic situation that even as the main show drew towards an end people were still streaming in, after finally managing to find a place to park. Vanessa Gayle Sibanda (20yrs) beat 29 other finalists from around the country to become Miss Tourism Zimbabwe 2008-2009. Her prizes included US$18,000.00 cash, use of a brand new Mercedes Benz for one year, all expenses paid trips to the Miss World and Miss Tourism World pageants next year, a year long contract with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority which will see her representing the country at various national, regional and international events and a long list of other goodies.
