Tongai Moyo has taken an open swipe at Alick Macheso saying he is primitive and lagging behind the hands of civilisation and modernity. In an upcoming song that Moyo unveiled at a show in Harare over the weekend, the Kwekwe-based musician unleashed a barrage of mocking lyrics directed at Macheso.
Some of the lyrics of the song go: "Shamwari usasare nenguva, haisi nguva yekutorwa foto wakamira padombo. Haisi nguva yekupfumbura guruva wakapfeka sutu (My friend, move with the times. How can you pose for a photograph on a rock or dance in dust while putting on a suit)." Moyo admitted in a brief interview after the show that the lyrics were targeted at Macheso. “I composed the song after seeing my son watching a video of one of Alick Macheso’s songs. It was so funny that he was wearing a white suit but was dancing in the dust. I also recalled how he posed for some photographs. That was how the song came about,” said Moyo. It was the first time that Moyo openly admitted to dissing Macheso. The two musicians have previously been very evasive on the issue of their heralded Sungura Cold War. They have allegedly exchanged verbal venom through songs for the last few years but neither admitted to having directed derogatory lyrics at the other. Although it is well known that there is competitive beef between the musicians, it was not until last weekend that Moyo made the exclusive admission to The Zimbo Jam. - Tapiwa Motsi
