Norway, Poland Scoop IIFF 2009 Awards Print E-mail

It was a night for Norwegian and Polish films as the International Images Film Festival for women came to a close on Saturday evening (28 November 2009). Films from the two countries scooped most of the prizes at the awards ceremony held at 40 Cork Road in Harare.

The Norwegian film Kissed by Winter scooped three awards, Best Director, Best Depiction of a Woman and Best Film. Poland won Best Script for Saviour’s Square, Best Cinematography for Time to Die and Best Actress for Alina Janowska’s  heart warming performance in The Reliable System.

The awards were presented by Guest of honour for the award ceremony, Grace Jenami. Grace is the CEO of 6 Finger Records, the secretary of the Zimbabwe Association of the Recording Industry and with her brother Tatenda, set up That Squad Entertainment which gave birth to the famous Chamhembe label.

Best Director:   

Kissed by Winter (Norway)

Best Depiction of Woman:

Kissed by Winter (Norway)

Ndichirimupenyu Awards 2009

Every year IIFF also honours women who have made significant contributions to Zimbabwean society. These awards are given because IIFF believes, as was once said by Vice President Joice Mujuru, “It is important to tell women how well they do while they are still alive and not only when they are dead.”

The awards were presented by a second guest of honour for the evening, Councillor P. Ndlovu, deputy mayor of Beitbridge.

Special Contribution:

Assistant Inspector Estina Sengwe
Has made it her personal business to see that victims of domestic violence are treated well. Works to make sure that this ethic spreads through the entire Zimbabwe Republic Police force.

Special Contribution:

Benhilda Marume
Programme Officer for the Disabled Women Support Organisation. Has worked regionally and internationally on issues of disability. Has educated women with disabilities on their rights.

Social Contribution:

Beatrice Mtetwa
Courageous lawyer with an unwavering sense of justice.

Contribution to Sports:           

Kirsty Coventry
World record swimmer. Zimbabwe swimming team member. Olympic medallist.

Contribution to the Arts :

Margot Denis
Singer, music teacher.  She was responsible for the introduction of opera to Zimbabwe. Has represented the country at regional level, winning a bronze medal. Has worked extensively with the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA).

Distinguished Woman of African Cinema:

Nakai  Matema
One of Zimbabwe’s most well-known film producers. Director and founding member of the Zimbabwe International Film Festival Trust.

Best Friend of IIFF:

Terence Mapurisana
Arts journalist at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation. Covers all aspects of the arts on TV and radio in his highly regarded news and feature pieces.
