The 2010 season of Theatre in the Park will open with a new play by Stephen Chifunyise titled Waiting for Constitution. The Zimbo Jam attended one of the rehearsal sessions at Rooftop Promotions last week and we can reveal that Chifunyise has come up with another thought provoking piece.

Waiting for Constitution- Cast

^ The cast of Waiting for Constitution. (L to R) Silvanos Mudzvova, John Pfumojena, Edith Katiji, Sebastian Maramba, Tendai Chakanyuka and Winnie Moyo.

The play features an exciting combination of seasoned and new television and stage names, including Power FM DJ and former Studio 263 actress Tendai Chakanyuka, NAMA 2003 Best Theatre winner Silvanos Mudzvova, long time community theatre director Sebastian Maramba, young musician-cum-actor John Pfumojena, actress-cum-musician Edith Katiji, and vibrant stage and screen actress Winnie Moyo.

It is directed by Dave Guzha, ably assisted by Tafadzwa Muzondo and is set to open to the public on February 24th, to run until 20th March.

“Why is a new constitution necessary?” asks Chifunyise in this new production. “What is wrong with the current one? Why was the 2000 constitution rejected? How achievable is a people-driven constitution? Who are the people? What are the dynamics of constitution making? What fundamentals and ideals make a democratic constitution? Who are the custodians, enforcers and watchdogs of a democratic constitution? What guarantee is there that the new constitution will not be amended considering that 19 amendments have been done to the current one? How important is freedom of expression and access to
information in a democratic constitution and in guaranteeing that diverse opinions and ideas are catered for in checking and balancing our constitution?”

Chifunyise, in the usual light-hearted way, shows how the constitution making process- and its delay- affects the lives of ordinary people. The play comes at a time when Zimbabwe is undergoing a constitutional making process that has not been spared from challenges and controversy.

I think more artists need to do this sort of thing to get the word out to the
people about the constitution and to get them involved. Kudos to Theatre in the
Park.
