Edgar LangeveldtIt was heartbreaking to hear of the personal troubles that Edgar Langeveldt went through over the last few years. Overnight he virtually disappeared from the entertainment scene and many thought he would never return- but he’s back with an exciting new comedy at Theatre in the Park.

The multi-talented comedian presents Update 3: The Bridal Party, a light-hearted look at life in Zimbabwe.

The Update series has had an impressive track record since the first edition in 2003,  Update, a play which more than matched veteran producer, Daves Guzha’s brief to Edgar to summarise the condition of Zimbabwean society.

Adopting the narrative structure of a funeral, the comedian visualised and
portrayed a farewell to the “late, great Bill", as a coterie of hilarious characters gathered around a coffin to prepare to bury a dear friend. The sold-out show enthralled audiences when it climaxed with the opening of the coffin to reveal the hapless corpse, a 500 dollar bill, which at that point in time was about to be phased out by the Reserve Bank.

In 2005, Rooftop Promotions and Edgar teamed up once more for a sequel,
Update 2. By this time, Langeveldt had just been announced as one of the winners for that year’s Prince Claus Award.

Staying true to himself, Edgar once again portrayed various funny characters wrestling severe economic and social changes. All this against the backdrop of an elitist gathering in a 5-star hotel composed - prophetically? - of self-satisfied members of  major parties and other top luminaries.

Update 3 continues the tradition of the one-man genre with over a dozen different male and female “people” straight out of the mind of Zimbabwe’s pioneer in stand up comedy: Aunty Angelina (from 2nd Street Extension a well-established character), her hapless and harried “muzukuru” Frank, a dubious spiritual advisor known as Doctor Guru, as well as all the voices of a host of supporting characters.

This time, the setting is a wedding, as a depressed Frank battles to make major decisions of the heart and choose between five women.

The wait is over! Edgar makes a welcome return to stage with his unique brand of energetic humour that will leave you listening, learning and above all, laughing.

Featuring the set and prop design talents of Lesang Moyo, a fashion designer who has a unique eye for fashion and costume, Update 3  presents comedic material firmly centred in Zimbabwe¹s milieu, yet ranging in scope from Afghanistan to AIDS, Obama to Osama, Zapiro to Zuma, World Cup 2010 to Louis Hamilton, coast to coast and heart to heart!

The real update though, is that this amazing comedian is back in the limelight, doing what he knows best.
