The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has confirmed that the preparations for the 2016 edition of the annual Jikinya Dance Festival are at an advanced stage.

The event will this year be hosted in Masvingo at the Masvingo Polytechnic College on November 25, 2016. On the day, primary school pupils from around the country will take the stage and showcase different traditional dances that epitomize cultures of various communities of Zimbabwe.

According to NACZ, the event is aimed at encouraging primary school children to appreciate and perform Zimbabwean traditional dances thus promoting and preserving Zimbabwe’s cultural and heritage.

This year’s festival will be running under the theme ‘Empowering communities through dance’. The premise highlights the importance of communities embracing Intagible Cultural Heritage (ICH) elements that are only found in their communities.

The event will see schools performing their two dance pieces, a prescribed piece and the other of their own choosing. The prescribed common piece for this year is Ihosana dance, a dance performed in Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. The idea of having a common dance piece is for pupils to understand and appreciate different cultures through dance.
