Keep the music playing. Piracy kills the artist, kills the music, kills the industry. That is the simple message that Harare animator, producer and creative spirit, Carl Joshua Ncube hopes to send out when he moves from his house to live out on Harare's First Street, starting this afternoon.
Speaking to The Zimbo Jam yesterday, Carl said that he was disappointed by how the issue of music piracy was not being taken seriously in Zimbabwe. “We say we are fighting piracy,” he said, “but anywhere you go on the streets and in flea markets you will find tonnes of pirated CDs.”
He has decided to take it upon himself to be change he wants to see- starting by sacrificing the comfort of his own lodgings to drive the message home that piracy impoverishes artists.
Carl is holding a press conference in Harare this afternoon (12 March 2010) to explain his actions. After that, he will move straight to First Street where he will live until end of day Thursday next week (18 March).
He will have not a single cent on him, not a change of clothes, not a supply of food. Zilch- save for his sleeping bag and his phone. “I want to survive on the street. I will deal with issues like food when the need arises,” he said. He has also been assured some measure of police protection by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
During the day he will have access to a laptop so that he can post updates on his experiences on his Facebook fan page.
He will also have with him a banner which he will ask people to sign as a pledge to stop pirating music and to stop buying pirated music.
Carl, who was has produced a number of major national events over the years including this year’s Miss Tourism Zimbabwe and the NAMA Awards has been appointed Executive Director for the Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA) which return this year (Mark you calendar! ZIMA on 22 May 2010). He recently called for more support for the NAMA awards and has bemoaned the low budgets that producers in Zimbabwe are given to work with. He is now asking Zimbabweans to support their artists and to buy the music.
He said that he is doing this for the artists and in due course there are certain things that he is going to ask of them as he continues the fight against piracy post his First Street habitation experience.
