One of Zimbabwe’s true jazz maestros, Tanga wekwa Sando makes a return to one of Zimbabwe’s true jazz venues this Valentine’s. Tanga, who last performed at The Mannenberg in 2008 and will treat lovers to a special show on 12th February, two days before the day of love.

The show, themed the Afrika Love Concert, will according to Tanga, be an expression of love for Africa and things African.

Tanga wekwaSando“I want to give lovers a special treat,” he told The Zimbo Jam. “I also want to reinforce the love that I have for Africa, the hope that I have for Africa and the triumph that I know is coming for the continent with the hosting of events like the World Cup.”

Originally, his idea was to have a huge concert like last year’s Africa Love Music Festival, held at Gwanzura Stadium, featuring other artists. However, funding was not forthcoming and he had to restrategize.

Tanga has also released a World Cup song, titled 2010 Shine Africa Shine which will be on sale soon via the Internet.

We asked him what music he would play for his show and he said it would be an experience in classical township music. His repertoire will include new songs like Ndiyeye, Inika Mudiwa and Ini Ndini Wacho. He will also bring out old favourites such as Wake, Paida Moyo and Nyembezi.

This man is one of the unheralded jazz heroes of our time. I remember him from
kudhara when he was with Giraffe.

Totally agree with you. There are a number of those in Zim. Like the Rusike
Brothers, Bernie Bismark, etc.
