I Always Carry a Condom

Munyaradzi Chidzonga amused- and shocked some- reporters at a press conference yesterday when he confessed that he always moves around with a condom. Pulling one out from his pocket, he explained that people should stop pretending and get real about the AIDS pandemic.

Speaking at a press conference in Chisipite, held for Namibian Big Brother Africa Housemate, Lucille Naobes, who arrived in the country on Wednesday, Munya said that carrying a condom did not mean that he expected to have sex with a random woman, but it was a protective measure- just in case anything happened.

“You never know,” he said, “you might end up drunk and wake up the next morning regretting something you did.”

“How many millions of people have AIDS in Africa?” Munya asked. “Yet we pretend on so many fronts. We need to get real and talk about these things. You can’t hide from sex. It’s everywhere.”

Munya takes out a condom^ "I always carry one."

Munya made headlines last year when he got intimate in the Big Brother house with Tawana Lebani, the housemate from Botswana and then again when he betrayed her during eviction nominations, preferring for her to stand for eviction over Angolan Ricco Venancio, who went on to win the show.

Munya came third after Ricco and Hazel Warren of Malawi.

Lucille is in the country to host two valentine’s dinners, one tonight for St George’s and Convent students and another tomorrow evening, themed the Beautiful Couples Dinner Dance.

Both functions will be held at Zim Gardens in Chisipite.

You are so right Munya. We pretend as if people don't have sex. That's why we
are in the mess we are in. Marriages are falling apart. Small houses abound. HIV
and AIDS is still spreading.

All because we cannot be frank and say it like it
is.

Well done Munya! let the truth be told and be heard. The most commomn cause of
HIV in Africa is sex! I don't know why people still think that, HIV comes from
sadza. It's not a Taboo to show your condom on national TV, In my opinion if we
Zimbabweans are more open about sex education, there should be less HIV epidemic
in Sub saharan. For as long as you are sexually active and you don't use a
condom HIV will catch up with you one day. I'm proud of you. You are a role
model!!

Munya thanks alot for being open about it. The problem is that people do not
want to face the truth and when they see someone being open they start to
critise.

For those who are positive, come out in the open and talk about it
freely and maybe the spread will not be so vicious as it is now.

Those thatt
are not please do not shun those that are. you never know it maybe you.

The
only way to eradicate this disease is to talk about.

People talk a lot of nonsense. There are peeps dying out there because no one in
the past has dared to do what Munya has done.
Ndinizvangu   |2009-02-18 12:06:19
Munya, I think you did a great thing but I am still a bit surprised at the fact
that 20 some years into the disease, people are still shy to talk about it.
People are dying left, right and center because of HIV yet sex is still being
treated as a taboo subject? That doesn't make any sense. It's important to be
open about sex and sex education. I believe that's one of the ways this
horrible disease will be curbed. Sex is everywhere and people should face up to
that reality and promote the use of condoms amongst those who are sexually
active. VIVA to you Munya - I salute you.
