The popular duo of Dr Zobha and DJ Squilla have told fans that they are leaving PowerFM. The two who have been hosting the Power Breakfast Show (PBS), which is on air every week day, for a year, have plans to “pursue other things.” In their final show on Friday (2 Jan 2009) Zobha took time to vent his anger- in the usual hilarious way- at Netone, Econet and Telecel- the three mobile phone service providers in Zimbabwe, for charging exorbitant US dollar rates for airtime (airtime is now sold in forex in Zimbabwe). He also took a swipe at Charles Mabika’s afro hairdo, appealing with the former to get a hair cut. Apparently this is a discussion he has been having with Mabika for a while now and Mabika has maintained that he is happy with his hair the way it is. Towards the end of the show they opened the phone lines and an emotional bout of farewell calls ensued, with many callers wishing the two well in their future endeavours. Squilla has been with PowerFM for six years now and Zobha for five. Before partnering with Squilla for PBS, Zobha used to do the show with Bridget Gavanga, aka DJ Bubbles and before that with DJ Munya Mlimo. The show is now being hosted once again by DJ Bubbles, in partnership this time with DJ Munya. Zobha and Squilla have been doing a number of functions together in the last few months, either as DJs or as hosts. Speculation among fans is that they are going into this sort of thing full time, hence their departure from ZBC Radio. Squilla is one of the only people who has a comeback for everything the comically talkative Zobha says. Other people get dumbstruck with Zobha’s sometimes shocking and rude statements- but Squilla knows just how to whack the ball back right into the former’s court. This is one of the reason the two of them hit it off so well- and why they have become so popular- as a couple- if I can put it that way…Share this page... |
