I first heard about the Ammunition Girls from their manager, Shingi Zinyemba of iCandy Management. I thought to myself, “well here’s an enthusiastic manager for a change,” but didn’t pursue the matter. Then I saw an article about them in the press. Then I saw them on Facebook, and on MySpace, then in the press again. But it was not until I heard them on radio that I knew we had to do a story on them.
^ Armed and dangerous. Ammunition Girls. When I heard them on radio (PowerFM), I caught the song halfway, so I did not hear the DJ say who it was. There I was wondering what fresh new sound out of the American Hip Hop scene this was, when the DJ cut in and announced that it was the “young and hot” Zimbabwean group, the Ammunition Girls. I was floored. Young indeed they are- the group consists of teenage girls from Arundel School, who are in their O’ Level year. I have subsequently listened to a few of their other tracks and I concur fully with that DJ- they are sizzling hot too. The Ammunition Girls are Elizabeth Tugwete (aka That Liz Daje), Charlene Chigumira (Baby Cash), Tatenda Jasi, Desnor Chigumba (Baby D) and Toxik. They have just released the demo version of their upcoming album entitled Spotlight and it is full of impressive vocals, lyrics and beats. The album also features the talents of Idols Africa finalist, Adiona, and the talented Tagz. The girls started singing as a hobby and never imagined that within such a short space of time they would be featuring on the Power FM charts- they made their chart debut at number 4 with title track to their album. They are planning to release a video soon and want to use it to get onto Channel O, MTV Base and ZBCtv. Criticism for the group has been that they do not have vernacular lyrics in any of their songs and do not sound like Urban Grooves. Shingi responds to this by saying that they are targeting not just the Zimbabwean audience, but are looking at the international market as well. You need to hear these girls for yourself to understand what all the hype is about. - Tino Wakanaka for the Zimbo Jam
