Power FM DJs Bridget Bublz Gavanga and Tendai The Sweet Thing Chakanyuka must have been barely out of their teens when Tevin Campbell and Horace Brown were releasing the hit songs that made them stars in the early 90s. The former were among the millions of girls around the world who went crazy over these two heartthrobs but never thought they would ever meet them. Last week they did.

Tevin and Horace were in the country, and in Africa, for the first time ever, for a show in Harare organised by RCV Entertainment.

When Bridget interviewed first Horace then Tevin on Power FM on Friday morning (11 December 2009) it was obvious she was star struck. Her colleague, Tendai, upon hearing over the radio that Tevin had entered the studio, jumped into her car and raced to the ZBC Pockets Hill Studios, managing to catch Tevin’s convoy of vehicles just as it left the parking lot. She blocked them with her car and jumped out screaming “Tevin! Tevin!”

Tevin rolled down his window and greeted her, but she wanted him to come out of the car for a hug and a few photos. The promoters of the show intimated to her that they had a tight schedule and could not wait as they were hurrying to their next engagement but Tendai would have none of that. She sat herself on the bonnet of the car until Tevin came out and gave her the hug she had dreamed about since she was a starry eyed younger woman listening to a similarly younger Tevin over the radio.

Then came a few photos and only then was she happy to release Tevin and his party.

She then made her way to the studio to find Bridget… and Horace.

That evening, at the concert, Tendai and Bridget were right up front by the stage screaming their lungs out along with other frenzied female fans. That girl Bridget. Every time I have ever seen her at a function, she has been so composed- but not on Friday. She was like a teenager once more- jumping up and down and screaming with sheer joy.

Fans for real

Tendai almost took off like a rocket when Horace pointed her out in the crowd and said, “That’s my girl!”

Her and Bridget were so happy they made me happy. It’s always good to see Zimbos having a good time, because goodness knows the tough times we have all had to go through over the last few years.

The next morning Tendai was on radio for her 6am-9am show with Larry Kwirirayi (Larry had also attended the show).  The two of them could not stop talking about the concert.  Larry summed up the reaction of many of those who attended when he recounted how he met graphic artist and animator Carl Joshua Ncube at the show. Carl said to him. “Wow, I didn’t think that Tevin Campbell could still sing.”

Tendai went on about how great Horace Brown’s body was and about how he had spotted her out in the crowd.

Later that day Bridget was on radio and she too recounted her side of the Horace Brown, Tevin Campbell story- the awe of it all still present in her voice.

All I can say is that Tevin, Horace, if those two gals are not your biggest fans you guys are gods man.
