The Tevin Campbell, Horace Brown show held in Harare last night (12 Dec 2009) had a disappointingly low turnout, blamed by the organisers on the sudden change of venue to the Celebration Centre. However, the 400 or so people who turned up- mostly women- got their money’s worth.
^ Horace Brown gets lyrically cosy with a fan. Supporting act, Mic Inity got the crowd warmed up with a polished reggae act. Just before 11pm, Horace Brown stepped onto the stage and ear piercing, mind-numbing, shrill screaming filled the auditorium as ladies, among them Power FM DJs Bridget Bublz Gavanga and Tendai The Sweet Thing Chakanyuka and actress Tinopona Katsande, leapt from their seats and rushed to be as close as possible to the stage. Horace performed tracks from his self-titled 1996 album and had many of the fans present singing along to a lot of his songs. He also did a few new tracks from his upcoming album. Things got heated when Horace knelt on the stage and started dishing out kisses to some of girls. One girl had trouble letting go and had to be pried away by another one who wanted her turn. As they disengaged from the American singer, they jumped up and down screaming in disbelief at not only having seen and heard Horace, but having touched and kissed him as well.
^ Fans discover that Tevin Campbell still can sing. The temperature went up even further when Horace took off his shirt and revealed his famous torso. A few ladies got a chance to run their hands over his well-developed pectorals and abdominals, sheer wonder written all over their faces. The delight was not one-directional. Horace too was stunned by the response was getting. “Wow!” He exclaimed, looking a little overwhelmed, “I feel like Barack Obama!” Twenty minutes before midnight struck another loud volley of screams reverberated through the Celebration Centre as Tevin Campbell took to the stage. He started things off with his hit song, Can We Talk and his voice was drowned by the hundreds of other voices belting out the lyrics. He too was amazed by the reception he got. Even the songs he thought people didn’t know, they knew. Then some of the girls started ululating. “Oooh,” he said with elation on his face and a little excited shudder, “I love that sound, do it again.” The show ended just after midnight, with Tevin and Horace heading off for an after-party at Symphony restaurant and club. - The Zimbo Jam Share this page... |
