Born Arnold Chirimika, SoProfound has worked tirelessly to build a name that is now respected in he in the industry. Today SoProfound is a radio personality, poet, songwriter and MC. Its been a while since has has been on stage though, Zimbo Jam caught up with him to find out why.
Zimbo Jam: SoProfound has been off the stage for a minute; what has he been up to?
SoProfound: I have been doing a lot of other things that are not really poetry related. As you know I’m a personality on ZiFM Stereo now so I’ve just been finding myself in the media space and just mastering the craft on that front, learning the business of art and establishing structures that support the business end of things. However at the core of it all was a lot of self discovery.
Zimbo Jam: In your journey of self discovery, what did you find?
SoProfound: A lot of it is personal but what I can say is, I was reminded of the real reason why I do this, which is to be the muse of a generation that has lost it’s soul.
Zimbo Jam: Lets talk about your debut release, ‘Off Season–A Succinct Collection Of Honest Moments.’ Tell us about it.
SoProfound: ‘Off Season’ is one of those projects where I’m being completely honest about a lot of things. The concept was inspired by sport. You know in sport there is the season and then there is off season. During the season sports personalities are on top of their game, lights, a lot media and the performance is at it’s highest level . However, when the season is off, the lights go off too, the players are probably not in shape, the performance is on a minimal and most importantly that’s where you really interact with the truth of who they really are. For me that’s what this project is about. I’m not trying to be deep, sweet or anything like that but I’m just being honest.
Zimbo Jam: Tell us about the journey that led to this release.
SoProfound: Well I guess I got to a point where I knew what to write and how to write it. What to say and how to say it to get an applause, basically I got lost in being SoProfound and that’s a dangerous place to be. So I took a step back to see things for they really are and challenged myself to come up with a project where I was completely honest.
Zimbo Jam: Can we expect the same SoProfound who is about God and love?
SoProfound: Well to start with, I don’t just write about God and love. I write about life and it so happens I see life through the eyes of my faith. ‘Off Season’ is more radical in approach and you’ll find in there stuff that will shock you but it’s expected whenever there is honesty right?
Zimbo Jam: What are you promising your fans?
SoProfound: Well they can expect to know me better because I literally strip myself on this project.
Zimbo Jam: You are back on stage on the October 28, tell us about the event.
SoProfound: Yes & I’m really excited about that event. It’s a poetry night that’s being headlined by myself and Umind?!. There will be support from a lot of exciting new voices like Rumzy and Tk The Anomaly.
Zimbo Jam: Are you going to be performing more?
