Every Wednesday night in a state within our land brews a sensuous salsa storm. The rumble of heels smoothly sashaying and knocking dents of rhythm against the floor of Pariah State Borrowdale heralds “Salsa Night.”

Taste buds are teased by tacos and tequila. The experience is authentic. The Latin world is created, tasted, danced and lived in Harare.

Zimbo Jam interviewed Kelley Austen, the first lady of Pariah State and this is what she had to say:

“Matt and I got married in Puerto Rico, and the first time we went Salsa Congress was on the international Salsa dancing championship – the energy, talent, music, and vibe was incredible, the rhythm, the attitude…addictive!”

She continues “I’ve always loved dancing and have some experience back in the States with Salsa Nights and Swing Nights. These provide a bar or nightclub a way to offer a little something different.”

Dancers can put on a little something fancy and show their stuff, and enthusiasts can come and enjoy the show, or try it out themselves. It’s a great date night, a way for a couple to learn something new together, which is romantic and fun; or for a girls night out–girls always seem to look for an excuse to dance.

Pariah state connected with Rico and Toya from Salsa’s dance and fitness studio, at Old Georgians to turn the vision of Salsa Night into a three-step reality. Rico and Toya teach Zumba and Salsa classes at Old Georgians and are passionate about dance.

They jumped on board with the pariahs of Harare and launched Wednesday night Salsa Night right after the opening of Pariah State Borrowdale in February

Austen commented “It’s been so much fun – for the dancing community, and for the local community. We get all ages and all ethnicities out on the dance floor.” Clearly dance and fun unites.

Many hesitant, but curious beginners have made their way out in the last few months, sometimes waiting until their fourth Wednesday or so to try it, but everyone is welcome.

Rico, Toya and Gavin are available every Wednesday for FREE (yes you read correctly) personal, couple or group Salsa instruction and they are very open. No one is obligated to dance, many people just watch.

Pariah State Borrowdale plans to carry on Salsa Night every Wednesday and looks forward to a ‘sizzling summer of salsa’.
