Harare has many shoe repair men who sit at street corners and ply their trade. All over the city, both in the high and low density areas you will see them, sitting there needle, thread and glue in hand, giving new leases of life to footwear that has seen better days.

Ronny Sangoma  (31) has spent almost every day of his life for the last six years seated at the corner of Fifth Street and Baines Avenue in Harare’s Avenues suburb.  He runs his shoe repair business from a little bench there.

Before him, his father used to repair shoes at that very same spot for five and a half years. He was thrilled when Zimbo Jam approached him and asked to take his photo and tell his story. “Yes, you can take my photo,” he said. “My father used to repair shoes here. Then one day he died and I do not have a single photograph of him doing his work. I would have loved to have a photo like that so I can show my kids what their grandfather did.”

Sangoma lives in Tynwald.
