A new play ‘Master Harold and the Boys’ is set to premiere at Theatre in the Park today.

The stage piece is adapted from a book written by Athol Fugard during the apartheid era and explores issues to do with identity, race and social class among other themes.

The production will run for two days only with two performances a day, one in the afternoon and another in the evening to cater for both young and adult audiences.

‘Master Harold and the Boys’ is currently one of the setbooks in the ZIMSEC curriculum.

Munyaradzi Mtomba, the co-director of the play, had this to say: “The reason for doing this play is to help students understand their texts better as they would have seen the play and they get time to ask the actors questions about their characters and also to use theatre as a an effective tool to educate students or people in general”

The performance is directed by Innocent Mwapangira and has a cast of Rumbidzo Gunduza, Antony Mazhetese and Lucky Mpofu who are all brilliant actors. It is produced by Munyaradzi Mtomba, a University of Zimbabwe theatre and arts student, and veteran director Daves Guzha of Rooftop Promotions.

Munyaradzi revealed plans to tour the play in schools as the third term opens.

Since the re-opening of the Theatre in the Park in the bigger venue this year, after an almost four-year hiatus the venue has been a hive of creative activity with numerous plays, dance and musical shows. The development has been widely applauded by both arts enthusiasts and practitioners in the wake of limited platforms for performing artists to work in the city of Harare.
