The Brittle Paper, one of Africa’s top literary websites, has announced the shortlist for its inaugural Brittle Awards which will recognise the finest in free African literature online. On their shortlist of 48 works are three Zimbabwean writers; Petina Gappah, Ellah Allfrey and Bernard Matambo.

Work is judged under five categories: Fiction, Poetry, Nonfiction, Essays/Think Pieces and the Anniversary Award for works published on the Brittle Paper blog. Winners in the fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and essays/think pieces categories will receive $200 each and the winner of the Anniversary Award will receive $300.

Gappah was nominated under the ‘Fiction’ category for her short story “A Short History of Zaka the Zulu,”  which was published in The New Yorker.

Allfrey was nominated for “When We Talk about Kintu. It was published on The Brittle Paper and is up for an award in the Essays/ Think Pieces category.

Matambo’s piece, “Working the City”  was nominated in the Creative Non-Fiction/Memoir Category. It was originally published by Transition Magazine.
