Some say jazz music is dead in Zimbabwe, but the truth of the matter is that the genre is alive and kicking.
We have heard of the so called ‘Big Five’ artists in Zimbabwe (at times they are four or three depending on how many are popular at that given time or what the promoter believes is the best way to market their show.), the sad part is that in all the aforementioned brackets of ‘Bigs, there haven’t been any female musicians included and yet some of them are more musically astute than their male counterparts.
As per tradition, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe issued its final call for submission of entries for the 2016 National Art Merit Awards (NAMA) (deadline being November 30) but for the first time they have unveiled the team involved in monitoring artists and their works.
This has been a hard winter for those in the arts. There’s a struggling economy, which leaves audiences or buyers of art with less disposable income to support the arts. We’ve also lost two fabulous performance venues in Harare – the Book Café and Misty’s.
