Dance group Diversity shocked fans and bookies with their win of the 2009 edition of Britain’s Got Talent, held on Saturday (30 May). Many people expected the unemployed 48 year old amateur singing sensation Susan Boyle to walk away with the first prize.

However, Diversity’s tightly choreographed act wowed audiences and won them the phone in vote.

Susan Boyle has since been hospitalised for “exhaustion” after the stressful final. There are reports that although she gracefully accepted defeat on the stage (see video below), she afterward stormed angrily down a corridor and a day later started behaving so “erratically” that she was taken to a mental hospital. According to TalkbackThames, the producers of Britain’s Got Talent, Boyle was “exhausted and emotionally drained.”

When Susan Boyle first appeared on stage to perform in front of a huge audience and judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan, no one gave her a second look.

“What’s the dream,” Simon asks her. “I’m trying to be a professional singer,”she responds. Some members of the audience scoff at this response and Simon goes on: “And why hasn’t it worked out before Susan?”

“I’ve never been given the chance before- but here’s hoping it will change.”

It did. From the moment she opened her mouth to sing it changed. Simon Cowell’s eyebrows shot up. Amanda’s jaw dropped and loud cheers went round the audience. By the time she was on the third line of the song, the standing ovation had begun…

So, even though she didn’t win on Saturday, Susan Boyle is assured of fame and fortune for the rest of her days. An album deal, a tour of America, a book deal- all these and other opportunities already await her, should she choose to continue this life as a star, which just seven weeks ago, as she sat in her village home in Scotland, was not even a speck of dust on the horizon of her imagination.

Britain’s Got Talent is a Simon Cowell initiated show, which unlike many other talent shows, welcomes performances from non singers. It started in 2007 when it was won by Opera Singer Paul Potts. Last year it was won by dancer George Sampson. 19,19 million viewers watched the final on Saturday, the biggest UK TV audience watching the same show since England played Portugal in the semi finals of soccer tournament Euro 2004 (Just in case you were wondering- England lost the match) and thought to be the biggest ever reality show audience.
