With the rise in popularity of video on demand systems such as Netflix, Hulu and HBO, do traditional pay-tv platforms such as DStv still have relevance in Zimbabwe?

The answer to that question is difficult to construct.

However, what is true is that as more people get an appreciation of how video on demand platforms work and also discover ways to access latest entertainment, sport and news content on the internet, at times for free, the drive for one to continuously pump out money in monthly subscriptions on DStv is dwindling.

With the subscriptions being made in foreign currency, the burden on the consumer becomes heavier.

This is the reason why many are now opting to pay for data, though expensive, they feel they will get value for money.

But, the MultiChoice Group, the brains behind DStv seem to have a plan to keep people attracted to their service.

They are now investing more in live sporting content.

Two years ago they brought back Serie A allowing soccer fans to watch all the live action as Christiano Ronaldo made his move from Spain to Italy.

Now on Monday DStv announced that it will be bringing back live NBA action.

So basketball enthusiasts will start subscribing again as they would want to watch their favourite players in action.

The agreement between The Walt Disney Company Africa and the MultiChoice Group will result in two 24-hour ESPN channels being made available to DStv customers from 29 July, where they will be able to enjoy the very best of US sports.

DStv customers can look forward to the much anticipated return of the NBA from the bio-bubble on 31 July with two live games on the day. LeBron James and the LA Lakers renew their city rivalry with the LA Clippers on ESPN and later Orlando Magic take on the Brooklyn Nets. The Major League Baseball (MLB) regular season will also take prominence on ESPN, from 29 July with New York Yankees against the Philadelphia Phillies.

“As Africa’s leading video entertainment platform, we are unwavering in our commitment to ensure that we continue to find the best available content to delight our customers, both now and into the future. We endeavour to deliver both world-class international content as well as the very best in local content, giving our loyal customers a never-ending selection of outstanding entertainment,” says MultiChoice Group CEO, Calvo Mawela.

Together with the live sports programming, viewers will also be able to catch up on the very latest films, series, news, talk shows and highlights from ESPN’s iconic sports documentary and studio programming.

“In addition to being the home of American sports, ESPN is equally well-known for its dedication to great storytelling, something we as Africa’s most-loved storyteller can identify with,” added Mawela.
