True to the lyrics of their hit duet ‘Zvekupenga’ (meaning ‘at a level of madness’), Chashe Musarurwa McTaggart and Tinashe Makura’s first ever show together was one mad-crazy fun fest.

As the clock struck 12:30 pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon on May 2, the Lay’s Global stage was already packed to capacity with both fans and curious art lovers who had come to watch these two remarkable artists do their thing. And boy did they ace it; they played their hearts out as if it were their last show together, rather than their first, dazzling the crowd from the start to the end of their set.

A special member of the band was ‘Zvekupenga’ producer, Anton Morgan, who flew in to Zimbabwe for the concert from his Malaysia base.

In the first segment of their show, the two staged an acoustic, set which revealed their powerful vocal prowess, some unique poppy tunes that can be rare to find in Zimbabwe.

Their soulful vocals were truly amazing, melting the hearts of the audience who were left with no choice but to smile and clap along.

Then it was time to party as the full band joined in and from then on, the atmosphere was charged up and the initially laidback audience now invaded the dance floor.

The first outstanding factor about Tinashe and Chashe is their ability to pen meaningful lyrics that will captivate the heart and challenge one’s thought pattern. Tracks they’ve performed individually, such as ‘Africa,’ ‘Hello,’, ‘Moyo Muti,’ amongst many others are not just tantalizing to the ears but are rich, grounding and tell engaging stories.

Another powerful element about the duo is their unique sound. If they keep at it, they could be to Zimbabwe what Freshly Ground is to South Africa.

The third and most important element about the two is that they know how to sell their culture.

Many local artists do not have an appreciation for their own local languages and prefer singing in English, arguing that this is the only way they can breakthrough on the international scene. The reality is that when an artist pushes their culture and does it well, they are unstoppable.

By seamlessly mixing Shona and English lyrics in all their songs, Chashe and Tinashe left none of their audience members behind as their afternoon flight reached cruising altitudes.

The duo closed off their set with their chart-topping track ‘Zvekupenga,’ sending the crowd into a frenzy. After they finished, the crowd demanded an encore, got it, and danced again to this catchy, dancy tune.

We hope we’ll hear more from these two soon!
