The multi award-winning music group, Mokoomba is set to stage its first gig in the country this Saturday, March 9 at Allliance Francaise.

However, it will not be just another gig, but they will be two.

One slated for late afternoon and the other following shortly afterwards at the same venue.

Zimbo Jam got in touch with the groups manager, Marcus who shared with us more about their new model of staging two gigs at the same venue in one day.

Mokoomba always has innovative ways to approach showbiz. First, it was the pay what you want now we have two shows one-day same venue. Why have you chosen to go this route as opposed to just getting a bigger venue?

We are having two concerts on the same day at Alliance Francaise so that we are able to accommodate more people who would want to come and watch Mokoomba’s new acoustic set and this includes people with children or those who prefer early events. As you know, we have a shortage of purpose-built music venues so it is difficult to find venues big, medium or small that are suitable for the kind of concert that we want to present.

Acoustic feel is the theme for the concert. What does this mean to an interested fan or music lover in general planning on coming?

The acoustic set is a set that we developed a few years ago which puts more emphasis on traditional music, more melodic, more vocal and more theatrical. It’s a show designed for smaller venues, indoor venues and house concerts which makes the band more flexible, versatile and adaptive. This Saturday, Mokoomba will showcase a new set with new songs and the seating is for listening pleasure but people tend to get up and dance anyway.

Tell us about the album coming this year…

We are excited that this year we are going into the studio to record our next album. The new album will have more instruments and more power, similar to the production we had on our other album ‘Rising Tide’. It will not be stripped down like the last album ‘Luyando’ but both formats seem to work for us and Luyando is still doing well on the market.

Videos are the in thing now. Any plans on investing in video productions this year?

Yes, we are currently working with a local producer called Nyax to make a number of music videos that we will start shooting at the end of March before we embark on a six-month international tour.
