2019 has been a dull year by local standards regards activity on the showbiz scene. Only a few amazing gigs to remember such as the Patoranking gig, the Sauti Saul flicker and the Jacaranda Fest.

There were some other heavy contenders such as the Braai Fest but we all know things were not on point as it was oversubscribed and the sound system was weak.

Kudos to the “Outs” – the hustlers who came with platforms such as Braai-out and Cook-out etcetera, really helped keep things alive in the year of austerity.

To top it off, the big boys decided to take a chill pill. Both Winky and Jah decided not to turn-up, just dropping singles. Ammara and Tamy also decided to go slow in the express lane.

Dancehall was at an all-time low. Enzo was trending all year long but failed to dominate as he did in 2018. Bazooker flattered to deceive as his fire quickly fizzled out before the mega boom was felt.

Hip hop had Ti Gonzi and it ends there.

Hillzy and Gary are onto something but we will give them time. Let’s not rush them.

Having said all this, one thing remains consistent, South African acts continue to mop up the cash as they headline several events in the country.

In two weeks’ time Mzansi hip-hop hotshots, AKA and Nasty C will be descending upon Harare performing at two different locations on the same night.

Whilst local acts are busy fighting to have the biggest picture on the poster as has become the main focus for some – Mzansi entertainers are just taking home the biggest cheques.

It’s so pathetic, just a few weeks back, one promoter decided to bring Mafikizolo despite them not making a buzz in 2019. It was an obvious flop and the result was just tragic. But still, the Mzansi based outfit flew back home a couple of thousands Rands richer.

This December all roads lead to the Vic Falls Carnival and guess what, yes SA acts are dominating the headline acts section and yes they will enter 2020 with fat pockets whilst local acts are busy sleeping on the ball.

Let’s not forget how Bulawayo clubs are regularly hosting SA DJ’s. Again more money to our relatives from next door.

Sadly, nothing has changed regards exporting acts to perform for South African audiences in 2019. Zimbabwean acts still travel to SA but they are always performing for a predominantly Zimbabwean audience. Something needs to change going forward.

The time has come for pop acts to start competing strongly on the global stage.

Whilst variety is good for local music lovers we want to challenge local acts to wake-up and start rethinking their approach to the business of music.
