Yet another Pariah State has popped up and established its place within the Zimbabwean state, and this time these ‘pariahs’ are peddling pizza! My friends and I received our visas and entered their borders on Saturday afternoon at midday.

The state was calm with a nice family vibe, with chairs and tables dotted across the Shamwari complex on Maasdorp. It is a kid-friendly environment (not goats but human kids) and has a different ambiance to the Pariah State bars; this is where you come after the hangover, or when you don’t feel like heavy socialising and dancing all night.

The red theme, use of local materials, wooden pallets and artsy chalk writing remained consistent with the decor of Pariah States of Borrowdale and Avondale – once you step in, you know exactly where you are.

Say this alliterative phrase out loud with me: “Pulled Pork Pizza.” Need I say more? That’s what I ordered, while my friend had a “Cheeseless Chorizo” pizza. They were both delectable. One of the owners explained, “We use the best quality dough, which takes 24 hours to rise before it’s rolled flat.” This was evident in the taste and the perfectly thin crust, which allowed the flavour of the meat and veggies to dominate the taste buds.

The waiters were friendly, the surroundings pleasant. A quick Saturday jaunt turned into an extended afternoon of gluttony. I will definitely be going back soon to try the rest of the menu, and so should you, Jammers.
