Winky D a.k.a Wallace Chirimuko, returned once again to HIFA to give a spectacular show. This multi-award winning and talented Zimbabwean artist was recently voted People’s Choice at the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA 2012).  He started his career as a Dj and soon found his niche with Zimbabweans both young and old when he produced and sang urban reggae-dancehall music and has never looked back.

As much as I am well versed with South African groups, I had never heard of Tumi and the Volume.  I have since learnt that they are a Johannesburg-based quartet with Tumi Molekane on lead vocals, which include spoken word/poetry, Mozambican guitarist, Tiago-Correra,   drummer, Paulo Chibanga and bassist Dave Bergman.  Tumi has performed with pop star Shakira at the 2010 World Cup and “Tumi and the Volume”, have performed across Southern Africa, Europe, North America and Canada. They have also played alongside groups like Cold Play and Roots. The band has released three albums in six years. I must say they appear to have a huge following in Zimbabwe from what I could see.  The crowd was made up of all ages and races.

Zimbabwe’s spoken word movement has grown by leaps and bounds over the past few years and now the front runners like Chirikure Chirikure and Albert Nyathi can be proud of the legacy that they leave behind. The majority of slam poets who can be seen performing at Harare music venues, belong to a different style of poets but at the HIVOS poetry café a balanced combination represented Zimbabwe, whilst Oneness Sankara, a guest poet from the UK brought the house down at the end of the show.

Jazz Tap Ensemble

I was very excited to be covering the Jazz Tap Ensemble HIFA debut at the 7 Arts Theater in Avondale.  I had read about them in our local press and could not wait to watch this group.  JTE is a United States dance company based in Los Angeles.  They have appeared in major concert halls both in the United States and internationally. The Jazz Tap Ensemble is well known for innovating the art of rhythmic tap dancing to the music of  live jazz.
